As my 23rd birthday approaches, I find myself reflecting on my journey thus far. I recently read through my journal and found an entry that I created on January 1st of this year. It was a list of large goals that I wanted to achieve before 2024.
Here's the crazy thing: when I made my list, it all felt so impossible at the time. I knew that I was shooting for the stars, and I was completely hopeless.
Let me tell you: God has moved mountains for me that I didn't know existed. By His grace, I was able to accomplish 5/7 things on the list! With about two months left in the year, I will complete the rest of my list very, very soon.
As I mature, I am constantly reminding myself to trust the process. One day I will share my full testimony, but, for now, these 23 lessons will suffice.
23 Lessons I've Learned in 23 Years
Taking risks is an incredible source of growth.
Failure is gut-wrenching in the moment; allow yourself to feel the pain, then re-analyze.
You can love yourself better than anyone else can (word to Miley).
You're never truly alone.
Everyone has had to work from the ground up; if they can do it, so can you.
Don't be afraid to get the help you need.
Your ego can be your worst enemy.
Self-awareness is key; find someone who can help you recognize your strengths and weaknesses.
Exercise really does make you feel better (I've been in denial for years, sue me).
Don't wait until catastrophe strikes to get your life in order; maintenance is better than repair.
Education is something that no one can strip away from you. Earn it, cherish it, and utilize it in the best way you know how.
To cry is to heal from the inside out.
The more you learn to love the person in the mirror, the simpler life will be.
Mistakes happen. If you can't fix it, learn from it.
You cannot achieve your goals if you are surrounded by complacent people.
Protect your heart.
Don't look to others for reassurance. They'll never value you as much as you value yourself.
Give yourself grace!
Closed mouths don't get fed; ask and you shall receive (Matthew 7:7).
Your self-worth cannot be determined by your productivity.
The Lord can and will remove you from pernicious situations if you don't do it yourself. You're not in charge, so lean on His judgement, wisdom, and strength.
Do not allow your heart to become bitter. With time comes acceptance, and with acceptance comes healing.
You will attract the right people by being yourself. Shine your light without shame!
Raise Your Hand if You Went Through it This Year! 🙋🏾♀️
As Princess Tiana sang, "I'm almost there!" We got this, y'all! I can honestly say that this is the healthiest I've been in my entire life. This is a reminder that it is never too late to go after your dreams or take that leap of faith! You never know until you try, and if the answer is "no," then try again. This is your life to live, so make sure you love it.
As a disclaimer, this list does not imply that I remember to practice these lessons on a daily basis. I'll definitely be revisiting this list when I'm in a pickle and need a nickel (this reference may be a KC thing, lol)! Okay, I'll stop preaching now.
Feeling so Darn Proud of Myself,
Chasney
