Have y'all heard of perfume layering?
If not, here's the tea: combining different fragrances is the key to creating a unique, signature scent. It also increases their sillage and longevity. This is especially useful if you wanna be UNIQUE (shoutout Beyoncé, if you know, you know)!
If you decide to experiment, pay attention to which fragrances you layer. Be mindful of their notes, and keep track of which combos work best with your skin's pH. Certain notes pair well together, and others...not so much. We'll cover the details later in the article.
Now, let's get into it! These are five of my go-to fragrance layering combinations.
The 5 Best Perfume Layering Combinations
Combo #1: Delina & Idôle
Let me disclaim that I did NOT (and probs never will) spend over $300 for Delina by Parfums de Marly. Instead, I got this $15 perfume oil dupe that smells exactly like it.
Its top notes are litchi (lychee), bergamot, Turkish rose, peony, and vanilla. So, of course, I decided to mix it with Idôle by Lancôme.
Idôle has notes of bergamot, juicy pear, rose, and jasmine. This combo is very fruity and girly, but there's a hint of musk that adds some mystery and allure.
Perfumer and fragrance expert Pia Long had this to say as a perfume layering rule of thumb:
"My advice is to experiment and you might find a fun surprise. Examples of classic combinations are vanilla, resins and bergamot, rose and patchouli, or herbs with citrus." – Pia Long
Combo #2: Sol Cheirosa '62 & Femme Noir
I'm a gourmand girl, if you couldn't tell. Sol Cheirosa '62 by Sol de Janeiro is absolutely packed with gourmand notes: pistachio, salted caramel, golden sandalwood, and warm vanilla.
Femme Noir by Jean Marc Paris contains fruity and musky notes of strawberries, citrus, black orchid, rose, patchouli, vetiver, and sandalwood.
This combo will have you smelling like a snack. It's sexy, delicious, and intoxicating. I've gotten so many compliments with this combo, and my boyfriend loves it!
Combo #3: Bella Vita & Flowerbomb
I love this specific combination for the summer months; it's sweet, floral, and fresh. I feel like a daffodil when I layer these (I have absolutely no idea how a daffodil smells, but y'all get the point).
Bella Vita by Guess has notes of sour cherry, Italian lemon, vanilla, orchid, jasmine, and Amberwood.
On the other hand, Flowerbomb by Viktor & Rolf contains notes of bergamot, orchid, jasmine, rose, freesia, and African Orange Flower to name a few. Together, these fragrances have an amazing sillage and the longevity is out of this world!
Combo #4: Cloud & Shaghaf Oud
Talk about sultry! This combo is a "smize" in a bottle. I would definitely recommend layering these two in the colder months and/or for evening events.
Cloud by Ariana Grande is very warm and spicy, yet still smells fresh. Its top notes of juicy pear, bergamot, and lavender blossom accentuate its femininity.
There are also base notes of "sensual musks" and creamy blonde woods that add depth and enchantment.
Shaghaf Oud by Swiss Arabian is (clearly) an Arabian fragrance with top notes of saffron and oud. In my opinion, it's way too strong and pungent to wear alone. It's very musky and spicy, which isn't everyone's cup of tea. That's why I like to layer it with Cloud (making sure to spray this one first) to soften the scent and add some dimension.
Bonus: This combo also pairs very well with the Gingham lotion from Bath & Body Works. Use all three to achieve incredible projection and longevity!
Combo #5: Magnolia Bliss & L'Eau
Magnolia Bliss by Juliette Has a Gun is, by far, my favorite fragrance ever. It's such a complex fragrance on its own, with top notes of bergamot, lemon, petitgrain and ginger. The middle notes are what give the fragrance its name. There's a dreamy combo of nectarine, magnolia, and freesia. I would bathe in it if I could!
L'Eau by Jimmy Choo pairs amazingly with Magnolia Bliss. Its notes of hibiscus, bergamot, nectarine, and musk add a delectable fruitiness to the combo.
As previously mentioned, Magnolia Bliss is already incredibly exotic and complex. Layering it with L'eau guarantees that no one else will smell like you. This pairing gives goddess energy, 100%.
So, What Do You Think?
I hope this article gave y'all a bit more insight into the world of perfume layering! If I had to choose my favorite combo, it would definitely be Magnolia Bliss and L'Eau. I literally cannot describe how amazing those scents smell in unison, so please try them out to see for yourself!
